Let’s Talk About the Dress Under the Gown
Here’s a question I get more often than you’d think: “Does it even matter what dress I wear under my cap and gown?”
Yes. It really, really does.
The dress you choose for your cap and gown photos is one of those decisions that seems small but shows up in every single image. And after photographing nearly 150 seniors, I’ve seen what works, what doesn’t, and what makes moms cringe a little when they see the proofs.
So let’s get into it.

The Real Challenge With Cap and Gown Photos
Here’s the thing most people don’t think about until they’re standing in front of my camera: a graduation gown covers most of what you’re wearing. So the only things actually visible are the neckline, a little bit of sleeve or strap, and the hem of your dress peeking out at the bottom.
That small slice of fabric? It matters more than the whole outfit.
And when seniors show up in a dress that fights with the gown instead of complementing it, it creates a visual problem that even the best editing can’t fully fix.
My whole approach to senior sessions is built around making things easy and stress-free. That starts way before we meet at the location – and dress color is a big part of that prep.
What Actually Works (And What Doesn’t)
The White Dress: A Classic for a Reason
Let’s be honest – the white dress is the answer almost every time.
It is a very classic look, and it rarely, if ever, ages. Stick with something like an A-line cut with straps or a simple sleeve, and you genuinely cannot go wrong. It’s clean, it’s timeless, and here’s the best part: every single cap and gown color looks good over a white dress.
- Navy gown? White dress. Perfect.
- Black gown? White dress. Even better (more on that in a second).
- Red, royal blue, green, maroon? White dress. Still perfect.
If you’re standing in a store trying to decide and you want the safest, most beautiful choice for your cap and gown photos – pick the white dress and move on with your life.
The Black Dress: Proceed With Caution
I know. Black is classic. A little black dress has its place in the world, and I’m not here to talk badly about it.
But for cap and gown photos specifically? It’s not my favorite.
Here’s why: so many graduation gowns – especially the black ones – are already very dark, heavy fabric. When you put a black dress underneath a black gown, you end up with a lot of dark material in one place, and the whole look can start to feel flat and heavy in photos.
Fun fact… the black gowns already have a little bit of a “giant trash bag” situation going on (I say that with love). Anything you can do to add contrast – especially against a black gown – is going to make your photos so much stronger.
If your school requires a dark dress, try to go as light as the dress code allows.
Trendy vs. Timeless: Choose Wisely Here
This is the part I really want you to sit with for a second.
The most common mistake I see isn’t necessarily about color – it’s about choosing something too trendy for the cap and gown outfit specifically.
Here’s my honest take: for the dress you’re pairing with your cap and gown, this is the one place where I want you to choose something Grandma would approve of. Something your mom or dad would love. Something beautiful, conservative, and timeless.
- Classic cut over trendy silhouette
- Simple fabric over statement material
- Timeless neckline over the style of the moment
You have the rest of your session outfits to show off your personality and current style – and please do. But for the cap and gown look, going classic is the move. I promise you won’t regret it when you’re looking back at these photos ten years from now.

Why This Matters More Than You Think
Senior photos aren’t just pictures. They’re the images that end up framed in your parents’ house, printed in the yearbook, and passed around to grandparents who will keep them forever.
The cap and gown is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. The goal is to look back at these images and feel like you – not like a specific trend from 2026.
Getting the dress right sets the whole session up for success. It’s one less thing to second-guess, and it means we can focus on what actually makes these sessions special – the connection, the fun, and capturing who you genuinely are at this moment in your life.
When you show up prepared, the whole experience feels easier. And easy is kind of my whole thing.
