New Year, New Milestone: A Senior Photo Planning Guide for the Class of 2027

< back to blog

Let’s Be Real: “Senior Year” Starts Sooner Than You Think

Quick question… have you already seen your senior friends’ posts with dreamy beach shots, Spanish moss, and those iconic downtown Savannah vibes, and thought, “Wow…they’ve already done their senior photos!?” Yep. Before winter break you probably should have already taken your senior photos.

I get it. The school year is barely starting, and thinking about next year’s cap-and-gown journey feels a little big eh right now. But here’s the thing… rising juniors, especially Class of 2027, are already in the perfect spot to start planning. Not booking (yet) – but planning. That gentle leg stretch before the race starts.

If you’re a junior or a mom who landed here wondering when to start thinking about senior photos, you’re in exactly the right place. I’ve worked with nearly 150 seniors right here in Savannah, and the ones who felt the most relaxed, confident, and excited on session day? They started early.

Let’s talk about how you can do the same.

This image is a three-panel collage of outdoor portraits taken in a leafy, residential neighborhood, giving a soft, natural, and serene feel.
Left panel: A young woman sits on a green lawn wearing a light pink, floral-patterned dress. She smiles gently at the camera with her hands resting in her lap. Large trees and charming houses blur softly in the background, creating a calm, springlike atmosphere.
Center panel: Another woman walks along a sunlit sidewalk lined with grass, shrubs, and mature trees. She wears a white dress with black polka dots and dark shoes, glancing back over her shoulder with a bright smile. A classic streetlamp and brick buildings add a quaint, neighborhood charm to the scene.
Right panel: The final portrait shows a woman standing behind a lush bush of blooming purple hydrangeas. She wears a white dress with short puff sleeves and smiles warmly at the camera. The greenery, flowers, and softly lit homes in the background give the image a romantic, garden-inspired feel.
Overall, the collage highlights different personalities and styles in a peaceful outdoor setting, emphasizing natural light, greenery, and a fresh, elegant mood.

Why Now? Because Next Year Gets Busy, Fast.

Here’s the truth: senior year is a whirlwind. Fall football games, that college application hustle, volunteering, sports, jobs, family stuff, maybe sleep… it all starts to stack up.

When you wait until mid-senior year to even think about booking, suddenly your “dream” summer session in Forsyth or your glowy sunset shoot on Tybee feels like a logistical Rubik’s cube.

And listen – your senior portrait experience should not be the thing that makes you feel frazzled. It’s supposed to be the fun part! Like your moment to pause, feel special, and have your own red carpet day right here in Savannah.

Here’s how we make that happen – starting with some smart (and simple) prep now.

This image is a three-panel collage of beachside portraits taken at sunset, each capturing a joyful, carefree mood with soft pastel light and ocean scenery.
Left panel: A young woman kneels in the shallow surf as waves wash around her legs. She wears a colorful floral top and teal pants, laughing openly toward the camera. The water splashes around her, and the pink-tinged sky and rolling waves create a playful, energetic feel.
Center panel: Another woman stands barefoot on a wooden boardwalk that stretches toward the beach. She wears a flowing blue-and-white floral dress and looks back over her shoulder with a gentle smile. The warm sunset light, dunes, and distant beach house give this image a serene, romantic atmosphere.
Right panel: The final portrait shows a woman sitting at the edge of the water as foamy waves curl around her. She wears a vibrant green dress and smiles softly while brushing her hair back with one hand. The scene feels relaxed and elegant, with the ocean and sky blending into soft pastel tones behind her.
Overall, the collage highlights individuality and joy in a coastal setting, blending movement, natural light, and expressive poses to create a fresh, summery mood.

What to Start Doing Now as a Future Senior

1. Ask Around and Know the School Rules

Don’t wait until next spring to hear “Oh, didn’t you know the yearbook deadline was last week?”

  • Start asking your senior friends what your school’s photo rules are.
  • Some schools require formal tux/drape photos. Others allow casual pics, or both.
  • Find out who handles the yearbook submissions (hint: it’s not your mom… or me).

Knowing what your school requires for the yearbook helps you plan if you want to book an entirely separate senior casual shoot with your favorite senior photographer (hi, it’s me).

This image is a three-panel collage of outdoor portraits set in charming, historic-looking locations, giving the overall scene a warm, elegant, and lifestyle-focused feel.
Left panel: A young woman poses in front of a textured brick wall topped with greenery and white columns from a historic-style building. She wears a long, flowing white dress with blue floral patterns and heels, lifting the hem slightly as she smiles. Overhanging tree branches frame the scene, adding a graceful, Southern-inspired atmosphere.
Center panel: Another woman stands along a brick sidewalk bordered by a tall, neatly trimmed hedge. She wears a patterned maxi dress in warm tones layered with a denim jacket and dark shoes. She smiles directly at the camera, and the perspective of the path and hedge creates depth and a relaxed, stroll-like feel.
Right panel: The final portrait shows a woman standing by a waterfront railing, looking back over her shoulder with a bright smile. She wears a white dress with red floral patterns and wedge sandals. The water, distant buildings, and soft sky in the background give this image a breezy, coastal-city vibe.
Overall, the collage highlights three distinct settings—historic architecture, leafy streets, and waterfront views—while emphasizing natural light, flowing dresses, and confident, joyful poses.

2. Start Following Photographers You Like (Seriously)

Hot tip: watching how we show up day-to-day on Instagram or TikTok is your best peek into what we’re like behind the camera.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I like their style? (Bright and natural? Moody drama? Lots of props? No props?)
  • Do they show up consistently? (You want someone who responds to emails and edits quickly.)
  • Do they seem fun? Approachable? Like someone I’d actually want to spend 2 hours with?

Seniors who follow early often end up with dream session dates… and zero regrets.

This image is a three-panel collage of outdoor lifestyle portraits, each set in a bright, picturesque location with a relaxed, summery feel.
Left panel: A young woman stands on a shaded sidewalk surrounded by lush greenery and trees. She wears a short black dress with puff sleeves and embroidered detail, paired with black shoes. She smiles gently at the camera, and the leafy background and soft light create a calm, neighborhood atmosphere.
Center panel: Another woman poses on a quiet street in front of a white house with blue shutters and a black iron fence. She wears a bright pink sleeveless top and a light denim skirt with sandals. Standing in a casual, confident pose, she smiles toward the camera, and the classic architecture adds charm to the scene.
Right panel: The final portrait is a close-up of a woman standing in a grassy marsh area near the water. She wears a white strapless dress and smiles warmly, with soft sunlight highlighting her hair. The blurred background of marsh grass and water gives the image a light, coastal, and romantic feel.
Overall, the collage showcases three different personalities and styles in scenic outdoor settings, unified by natural light, fresh colors, and an easygoing lifestyle aesthetic.

3. Take Mental Notes (or Pinterest Boards… or Full-On Canva Presentations)

Fun fact: one of my seniors made a whole Canva guide for her session. Each outfit had a theme, links to inspo pics, and she wanted my input for location ideas for every look.

Another came armed with hangers for each outfit, and each one had:

  • a ziploc bag with chosen jewelry
  • a grocery sack with the shoes
  • even the exact bra she planned to wear

These two made my photographer heart so happy. But even if you’re not planning a full slideshow, now’s the time to:

  • Pin or save photos you love
  • Note if you’re a Spanish moss girl or beach lover or city chic type
  • Think about what makes you you (sports? Books? Dance?) and consider how that could be part of the story

This image is a three-panel collage of outdoor portraits, each highlighting a different individual in a natural, elegant setting with a celebratory, milestone-focused feel.
Left panel: A young woman stands beside a white column, smiling warmly at the camera. She wears a flowing mustard-yellow patterned dress and holds a decorated graduation cap that reads “You’re Gonna Go Far – 2025,” adorned with floral designs. The leafy background and soft light emphasize a proud, joyful graduation theme.
Center panel: Another woman poses mid-step on a curved stone staircase surrounded by greenery and moss-covered walls. She wears a bright red, flowing dress and smiles confidently while holding the railing. The dramatic setting and vibrant color of the dress create a striking, dynamic portrait.
Right panel: The final portrait shows a woman in a simple white dress standing near blooming greenery and a staircase. She gently holds a branch with small white flowers and looks calmly at the camera. The soft focus background and natural tones give the image a serene, romantic feel.
Overall, the collage blends celebration, confidence, and elegance, using lush outdoor settings and expressive poses to capture personality and meaningful life moments.

4. Ask Questions Early

Not ready to book yet? Totally fine. Still ok to reach out and say hey. Getting answers now saves you time and stress later.

Ask helpful questions like:

  • When do you normally book senior sessions?
  • How does the process work?
  • What do I need to know about reschedules, outfit planning, etc?

It’s also a good time to find out if your favorite photographer (again – me, I hope!) runs a senior team or does extra pop-up shoots. My Senior Experience Team opens applications early, and once it’s closed… it’s closed.

This image is a three-panel collage of outdoor portraits, each featuring a different young woman in a lush, residential setting with classic Southern charm.
Left panel: A woman stands on bright green grass in front of a white picket fence and a dense hedge of yellow flowers. She wears a light blue-and-yellow floral dress with ruffled sleeves and heels, posing confidently with one hand on her hip. A palm tree and a light-colored house appear in the background, giving the scene a cheerful, summery feel.
Center panel: Another woman poses along a quiet street bordered by a white fence and greenery. She wears a navy-blue, tiered midi dress with ruffled shoulders and light-colored shoes. She smiles calmly at the camera, and the soft, filtered light creates a relaxed, elegant atmosphere.
Right panel: The final portrait shows a woman walking along a tree-lined sidewalk with hanging Spanish moss. She wears a flowing blue-and-white floral maxi dress that moves with her stride. Streetlamps and leafy trees frame the path, creating a graceful, storybook-like setting.
Overall, the collage highlights natural light, flowing dresses, and picturesque neighborhoods, emphasizing confidence, ease, and a timeless outdoor portrait style.

5. Understand the Value Behind the Experience

Can I say something that might ruffle feathers? Senior photos are not “just pictures.”

They’re:

  • Proof of who you are at a really magical, in-between moment
  • A day to feel celebrated while juggling a jam-packed life
  • A gift, for your parents and future you, to look back on

A lot of people hesitate at the cost. I get it. But investing in a senior photo session is investing in an experience that sticks with you way longer than a new pair of shoes or another homecoming dress. It’s your only high school graduation, after all.

This image is a three-panel collage of beach portraits, each capturing a different individual in flowing dresses against soft sand, sea grass, and ocean scenery. The overall mood is elegant, joyful, and serene, enhanced by gentle coastal light.
Left panel: A woman walks barefoot along the shoreline wearing a bright red, tiered dress. The fabric moves with the breeze as shallow waves lap at her feet. She smiles softly while looking toward the camera, with a pier and distant structures visible along the coast behind her. The scene feels romantic and airy.
Center panel: A close-up beach portrait of a woman standing on pale sand near dune grass. She wears a vibrant green, one-shoulder ruffled dress and smiles warmly, resting one hand against her face while the other crosses her body. Her pose feels confident and joyful, and the soft, neutral background makes the color of her dress stand out dramatically.
Right panel: The final portrait shows a woman seated in the sand near tall beach grass, wearing a flowing blue dress. She looks back over her shoulder with a relaxed smile, bathed in warm, golden light. The scene feels calm and reflective, with subtle lens flare and natural textures adding softness.
Together, the collage highlights individuality and grace in a coastal setting, using bold dress colors, natural movement, and gentle light to create a timeless beach portrait aesthetic.

You Deserve a Senior Session That Feels Like You

Planning early isn’t about being extra. It’s about making sure you’re not scrambling at the last minute or settling for whatever date or location is left.

You deserve to:

  • Pick a photographer who clicks with you
  • Choose outfits with intention (not panic-searching your closet the night before)
  • Have your photos taken somewhere that feels meaningful
  • Show up confident, comfortable, and authentically you

It starts with a little prep now, and trust me – future you will thank you.
