My favorite accessory for photos…flowers!! Today I’m sharing what my favorite flowers are here in Savannah and when you can expect to see them around town.

Azaleas

Azaleas are probably my favorite flower Savannah has to offer but the limited time frame the good ones are blooming makes scheduling your session to have azaleas a little tricky. I personally feel the best time to have azaleas in your photos is the first weekend in March but in the past few years they’ve been blooming anywhere from the last weekend in February to the last weekend in March.

These really depend on the weather – both how “cold” the winter was and how fast the heat and humidity attack spring. There are also smaller azalea bushes around town that bloom more regularly but they aren’t quite as pretty and large as the spring azaleas.

Where is the best place to find the “good” azaleas? Forsyth Park, Bonaventure, Oglethorpe and Liberty Streets, and Whitefield Square.

Jasmine

My second favorite flower in Savannah is the white jasmine that blooms in the spring – it smells so good!!! This flower has a quick bloom cycle so if you want jasmine in your session the last two weeks of April are your best bet!

Where can you find jasmine in Savannah? The streets around Pulaski Square, Chatham Square, and Greene Square.

Hydrangea

Can I love all the flowers because I think I’m going to tell you hydrangea are my favorite also lol!! When these flowers bloom big I love them so much!! These bloom early in June and depending on the heat and rain may or may not stick around for long.

Where are the best places to find lots of hydrangeas (and not be in someone’s yard)? Whitefield Square and Troup Square

Sunflowers

Sunflowers are the quintessential summer flower and with approximately a 2 week window and needing to have access to a field they might be the trickiest flower to include in your session. Here in the Savannah area they bloom in late June/early July but that may vary based on when the field was planted. If you want to include sunflowers in your session you need to reach out early in May so I can call the farm I have used in the past to see if they planted a field, if they are opening to photographers, and when the bloom is predicted.

Where can you find sunflowers? Depends on the field – the field I’ve used in the past is planted by Rahn Farms and is in Shawnee (60-90 minutes outside of Savannah depending on traffic)

Misc.

Crepe myrtle, wildflowers, those random purple things you see on the tall bushes, and whatever those yellow flowers are by that picket fence are also pretty easy to find, depending on the season. Crepe myrtle are the most reliable and bloom in the dead of summer. The purple ones seem to bloom early in the summer and are gone once the heat takes over. The yellow ones by the picket fence bloom from June-October and the wildflowers can be found in early fall.

Where can you find these flowers? Crepe myrtle – pick your poison, they are the trash tree of the south (yeah, I said it 🤣🤷🏽‍♀️), the purple flowers are here and there but my favorite place for them is on Skidaway Island, the yellow ones by the picket fence are on Bluff Drive, and the wildflowers are off the side of the Truman if they don’t mow- it’s probably a tad sketch.
