When should I take my senior photos in Savannah? | Jaden Giorgianni Photography

When should I take my senior photos?

The most frequently asked question I get before a senior books their Savannah senior session. The answer…well it depends. If your school has a yearbook deadline for submitting a casual photo or if you want to put an ad in with your senior casual photos then you’ll want to make sure you get your photos taken before the deadline. If you aren’t on a deadline or don’t plan to submit a senior ad then you can really take your senior pictures whenever you like.

Today I’m ranking the 4 seasons according to my personal preference and sharing the pros and cons of each when it comes to senior pictures in Savannah. Side note…I’m aware Savannah really only has 2.5 seasons so for the sake of this post I’m defining seasons as follows.

Summer – June, July, August

Fall – September, October, November

Winter – December, January, February

Spring – March, April, May

Spring Senior Photos in Savannah, Georgia

Spring is my number one choice for senior photos because of the flowers BUT you do have to be mindful when waiting until spring that there are a few things that could make scheduling your spring senior session a little difficult. Spring is THE busiest time in your senior year! During spring you have Easter, spring break, prom (or proms), grad weekends, grad practices, school banquets, if you play a spring sport practices and games, Mother’s Day, Savannah has St. Patrick’s Day, etc. – I think you get the picture.

The weather can also be a little bit of an issue in the spring with rain reschedules – this isn’t a huge deal if you grab an early spring date but if you wait until the last minute having to reschedule your session due to weather might mean you don’t get your senior pictures back from your photographer until after graduation.

The pros for spring…FLOWERS!! and the temperature is still nice. It also feels like you’re wrapping up your time in high school and doing that big senior photo shoot to celebrate!

The biggest tip for scheduling in spring…schedule early!! Like in December or January to ensure you have the prime pick for what date you grab. If you want azaleas, go for a date the last week of February or first week of March. Over the last few years the azaleas in Savannah have begun blooming that final week of February and if we get an early heat wave they might not make it to the middle/end of March.

If floral in your senior photos is your main goal you can CLICK HERE! to read about Savannah’s Floral Scene – this post talks about what flowers you can expect to find in the area and when the window for booking would likely be. Keep in mind though, flowers cannot be controlled and if they aren’t blooming on your date there really isn’t much that can be done about it.

Fall Senior Photos in Savannah, Georgia

My second favorite time of year for senior photos is fall. Why…well it’s not quite as warm as summer, you can find some decent florals, and I typically (knock on wood) don’t have to do many weather reschedules in fall. Also, now that daylight saving time sticks around until the first part of November we don’t have to do sessions with 3 pm start times.

I always suggest a jeans/pants look for seniors – because who doesn’t wear jeans?? – and the fall weather makes changing into/out of your jeans look a little easier. Anyone ever peeled jeans off sweaty legs…

The fall can also be great if you aren’t playing a fall sport because there are fewer school obligations scheduled during this time of year. Speaking of school obligations – if you are looking to get your senior photos into the yearbook it’s likely your deadline isn’t until the end of September or October so you can get your photos taken to meet this deadline without looking like a sweaty summer mess.

Summer Senior Photos in Savannah, Georgia

Ok…so I have to say this. It’s difficult to decide to put summer in front of “winter”. I know that’s controversial but it’s a hard choice for me. Here’s why…

it’s. so. HOT!!!

June is fine – getting a little toasty but bearable, especially with a little AC break in the car when you change outfits but July, OMG, and August 🔥🔥🔥. The heat is uncomfortable for me but to be honest I wear jeans all year long and I really don’t care how sweaty I get during the session but for the seniors when your hair is sticking to your neck and changing your outfits takes 15 minutes because you can’t get out of your dress, it’s tough.

But summer is the most popular time for senior photos in the area so here are my tips for beating the heat. First, if you can, schedule for June! There are still some hydrangeas in June, if you know where to look (and I do!!) and like I mentioned before, the heat hasn’t become unbearable in June. Bring lots of water and make sure you cool off in the car between outfits with the AC blowing under your hair to help cool you down and freshen your look.

Winter Senior Photos in Savannah

The main reason it’s hard to rank winter after summer is because here in Savannah “winter” might be 3 weeks long…maybe, in January, maybe. Some of my favorite sessions have been shot in “winter” – the photos below, left the right, are from February, December, December, and February.

There are days during the winter months when it gets coldish and I don’t necessarily want to hit the beach for a Tybee sunset during January but most of the winter days here in Savannah are actually quite nice. There are camellias blooming so finding flowers is possible and if you love fall leaves December and January are your months. The biggest downside to winter senior photos in Savannah is the grass being brown in a lot of areas.

Two of my all time favorite senior sessions (see links below) were shot in February.

Kennedy  – mid February

Gabriele – late February

Tips for scheduling your winter senior session in Savannah – look at late February and have a few options for outfits if the day you have scheduled just happens to be the coldest day of the year. Also, I’ve had lots of seniors bring jackets (even in the spring) to wear around while we are finding the great spots then toss them to the side when we are shooting photos.
